Emeritus Faculty
Farhang Akbar, PhD, CIH, CSP, FAIHA
Dr. Akbar is a professor emeritus in the School of Population Health. He is an environmental
engineer and occupational health and safety scientist. His areas of expertise include
exposure assessment regarding physical agents, hazardous chemicals and mechanical
agents; health and safety programs, auditing and regulations; safety management; and
hazard control methods. His current research activities are focused on exposure to
nonionizing radiation; human chemical exposure assessment and biological changes;
exposure modeling.聽Prior to coming to UT, Dr. Akbar worked in the public and private
sector in occupational health and industrial hygiene in Tehran, Texas and California.
Overall his career spanned more than 43 years. He was named a Fellow of the American
Industrial Hygiene Association in 2002.聽Dr. Akbar began his career in Toledo as Associate
Professor at the Medical College of Ohio in 1991 and, in 1997, became a full professor
at the University of Toledo after the merge of the two entities. He was appointed
Program Director for the Master in Occupational Health in 2009, serving until his
retirement in 2017.
James H. Price聽 MS, PhD, MPH
Dr. Price is a professor Emeritus of Health Education and Public Health and has taught
courses in human sexuality, issues in public health and survey research. Dr. Price
has served as program evaluator on several federal and state grants and was most recently
a consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the use of
long-acting reversible contraceptives among adolescents. Recently, he served on a
committee for the CDC to help establish national objectives for Healthy People 2020.
He has published 3 textbooks, one on human sexuality and 300 articles in professional
journals. He has been the Editor of American Journal of Health Education and Journal
of School Health and is a past president of the American School Health Association.
Susan K. Telljohann聽 HSD
Dr. Telljohann received her doctoral degree in health sciences from Indiana University
with an emphasis on school and college health education. Her experience in health
education spans over 30 years, including health instruction from the junior high to
the university level. She has conducted research and published over 60 articles on
health education in professional journals, presented over 60 papers at professional
conferences and is the co-author of Health Education: Elementary and Middle-Level
School Applications, 7th Edition (McGraw-Hill, 2011). She is the co-author of the
HealthSmart K-12 curriculum and the Teach and Reach health series published by ETR
Associates. She also was one of the lead authors of the Center for Disease Control
and Prevention鈥檚 original and revised Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT).
She served as the President of the American School Health Association from 2000-2001,
was the Contributing Editor for the Teaching Ideas Column in the American Journal
of Health Education and has served on many professional health education committees
throughout her professional career. She served on the Board of Directors for the American
Association of Health Education and the National Health Education Standards Revision
Committee. She is the recipient of several honors and awards, including the聽Distinguished
Service Award from both the American School Health Association and the American Association
of Health Education, The Howe Award from the American School Health Association, The
University of Toledo Outstanding Teacher Award, the Phi Delta Kappa Educator of the
Year Award, the Patty Outstanding Alumni Award from Indiana University and the Ohio
Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Outstanding Young Professional Award.
