Grade Requirements
All coursework to be counted toward the M.S. or Ph.D. degree must be taken for a letter grade (A, A-, B+, etc.), and cannot be taken on a pass/fail (S/U) basis. A letter grade of C- or below is not acceptable for credit toward a graduate degree.Any student whose cumulative grade point average falls below a听3.0/4.0听is automatically on academic probation. For students on academic probation, an approved plan must be developed with the Graduate Program Director for bringing the GPA above the 3.0 threshold. Students who do not show progress according to the developed plan or who are on academic probation for 2 consecutive semesters are dismissed from the College of Graduate Studies.
For the award of a graduate degree, a student must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least听3.0/4.0听for all credit hours (coursework and thesis research) in their program of study. Thus, a 2.9999 is less than a B average and is unsatisfactory. Furthermore, the distribution of grades must be such that at least 2/3 of the credits for which such grades are earned carry either an A or a B grade (half A's and half C's is a 3.00 GPA, but does not meet this requirement). In addition, a student's GPA for grades received in all the coursework, exclusive of thesis/dissertation research, must not be less than听3.0/4.0.
If a grade of incomplete (I) is assigned at the end of a course, the student must clear the incomplete from the record as soon as possible. After one semester, the grade automatically converts to an F. All I grades must be removed from the transcript prior to graduation. A student having a grade of C- or below in any required course will not be considered to have completed the requirement of that course for the degree. Usually the course requirement can be met only by repeating the course and receiving a passing grade. Grades of C- or below are counted in computing the overall grade point average, including grades received in repeated courses.
For required courses in the curriculum, any course awarded a C- of below must be retaken. Students who complete a course and receive either an I or a C- or lower may not subsequently withdraw from the course.
