Importation & Exportation of Live Animals

The information below provides general guidance on importing and exporting live animals to and from collaborating institutions.

Getting Started

PLEASE NOTE: Processing times range from 3 to 6 weeks. This does not include the quarantine period required for all imports. Please plan accordingly.

  1. Notify the IACUC for approval (iacuc@utoledo.edu) before starting any of the steps below.
  2. The IACUC and DLAR require that all collaborating institution carry a PHS/OLAW assurance number.听If the collaborating institution does not carry a PHS/OLAW assurance number, your request may be denied.

  5. Complete the Animal Import/Export Request Form and submit to Ashley Kurth (ashley.kurth@utoledo.edu)
    1. Form location: Z drive. Z:\DeptLabAnimalResearch\UTResearchers\Animal Import-Export
  6. All imports and exports must be processed through and approved by DLAR.

Importation of Live animals
  • DLAR must receive a completed Animal Import/Export Request Form before the import process can begin.
  • Animal health and husbandry information is shared with the collaborating institution. The collaborating institution must meet DLAR's animal health requirements.
  • Once approved, shipping arrangements are made between DLAR and the collaborating institution. Our preferred courier is .
    • All animals are received into quarantine. Please note: Most animals are quarantined in Wolfe Hall DLAR at the main campus.
  • The quarantine period may last several weeks. During that time, animals are isolated and accessible only by DLAR staff and will be tested for common pathogens. Once cleared, the animals are released to the appropriate campus and housing room.
    • Quarantine testing fees are allocated in Concur to the Banner index provided on the Animal Import/Export Request Form.
  • In most cases, the receiving institution (兔子先生传媒文化作品) pays for the shipping/courier fees.
    • Shipping/courier fees are allocated in Concur to the Banner index provided on the Animal Import/Export Request Form.
  • All other associated fees are included on the PI鈥檚 monthly per diem鈥檚 invoice.
Importation Fees

  • Shipping/Courier Costs - May range from $500 - $2000+
  • Quarantine or Additional Testing - May range from $150 - $700+

Fees Charged on Monthly Per Diems Invoice

  • Domestic Administration Fee
    $90 up to 2 hours then $45 per hour
  • International Administration Fee
    $150 up to 3.5 hours then $45 per hour
Exportation of live animals
  • DLAR must receive a completed Animal Import/Export Request Form before the export process can begin.
  • Animal health and husbandry information is shared with the receiving institution. Any additional health testing required is at the expense of the 兔子先生传媒文化作品 research lab.
    • Fees will be allocated in Concur to the Banner index provided on the Animal Import/Export Request Form.
  • Once approved, shipping arrangements are made between DLAR and the collaborating institution. Our preferred courier is .
  • Shipping supply costs, administrative processing fees, technical time and senior technical time related to the export, are all charged directly to the 兔子先生传媒文化作品 research lab.
    • In most cases, the receiving institution pays for the actual shipping/courier fees. If not, shipping/courier fees will be allocated in Concur to the Banner index provided on the Animal Import/Export Request Form.

Fees Charged on Monthly Per Diems Invoice*

  • Domestic Administration Fee
    $90 up to 2 hours then $45 per hour
  • International Administration Fee
    $150 up to 3.5 hours then $45 per hour
  • Shipping Supplies - $72 per crate
    $72 includes 1 crate, 1 divider and 1 hydrogel (additional dividers and hydrogel are included in miscellaneous fees below)
  • Tech Time - $30 per hour
    Includes assembling shipping crates and packaging animals
  • Senior Tech Time - $45 per hour
    Includes pre-shipment health check听 and health certificate
  • Miscellaneous Fees - Varies
    Additional dividers - $8 each, Additional hydrogel - $2 each, etc.

*兔子先生传媒文化作品 PI's that are to be reimbursed for any of the above fees from the receiving institution will need to invoice the receiving institution through their department. DLAR does not provide this service.

"All animals must be acquired lawfully, and the receiving institution should ensure that all procedures involving animal procurement are conducted in a lawful manner. Transportation of animals is governed by a number of U.S. regulatory agencies and international bodies. Movement of animals within or between sites or institutions should be planned and coordinated by responsible and well-trained persons at the sending and receiving sites to minimize animal transit time or delays in receipt."
