Topic
"What is it like to edit a famous literary anthology in the 21st century?"
"In this presentation, I will discuss the major changes I made to the Norton鈥檚 vision of 鈥淭he Early Seventeenth Century,鈥 particularly its account of 鈥渢he age of discovery鈥 in which the English writers engaged with their country鈥檚 encounters with world beyond its borders, and its presentation of 鈥渨omen writers,鈥 who, rather than being identified as outliers, are placed within the literary currents and conversations in which they actually worked," says Dr. Crawford.听
is the author of multiple books on early modern English women, religion, and politics, and she is also one of the editors of the most recent edition of the Norton Anthology of English Literature, which will be the subject of her talk. She is one of the leading scholars of early modern literature, and this will be a great opportunity for you and our students to engage with someone who is directly responsible for determining what counts as the current "canon" of English literature.
The Richard M. Summers Memorial Lecture is made possible by an endowment fund established by Mrs. Marie Summers to honor her son, a member of the Department of English from 1966 until his death on November 5, 1988. Since 1990, it has annually brought to campus a distinguished writer, literary scholar, or critic to speak on literature or its relationship to language, culture, or art.
